Day 01 - Explore Chania Old Town

There is no better introduction to Chania than wandering through its enchanting Old Town.

Shaped by Venetian and Ottoman influences, every narrow alley tells a story. Colourful buildings, hidden courtyards, artisan workshops, and flower-covered balconies create one of Greece’s most photographed destinations.

If you do not have a car the following options are the best for you because they are at the Old Town.

Day 02 - Balos, Gramvousa & Falassarna

Most visitors choose to reach Balos Lagoon by boat from Kissamos Port. These boat trips usually include a stop at the historic island of Gramvousa. However, if you are feeling adventurous and have access to a rental car, driving to Balos can be an equally rewarding experience.

We recommend starting your journey early in the morning, before the summer heat sets in. This will allow you to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views and the walk down to the lagoon in cooler temperatures.

After your visit, head to the nearby village of Kalyviani for a well-deserved lunch at the renowned Grambousa Restaurant, where you can savour authentic Cretan cuisine prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

To end the day on a relaxing note, continue to the beautiful Falassarna Beach. Spend the afternoon swimming in its crystal-clear waters before witnessing one of the most spectacular sunsets in Crete—a perfect conclusion to an unforgettable day exploring western Chania.

Day 03 - Elafonissi & Kedrodasos

Frequently ranked among the world’s best beaches, Elafonissi is famous for its unique pink sand, created by countless crushed seashells, and its crystal-clear turquoise waters.

The shallow lagoon makes it an ideal destination for families with young children, while photographers are drawn to its ever-changing shades of blue, white sandbanks, and breathtaking coastal scenery.

For those looking to escape the crowds, a visit to nearby Kedrodasos Beach is highly recommended.

Located just a short drive from Elafonissi, this secluded natural paradise is home to an ancient juniper forest, pristine white sand, and remarkably clear waters. With its untouched landscape and peaceful atmosphere, Kedrodasos is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply relaxing in one of the most unspoilt coastal settings in Crete.

On your return journey, stop at local mountain villages and sample homemade cheeses, thyme honey, and olive oil.

Day 04 - Samaria Gorge

One of Europe’s greatest hiking experiences awaits. Stretching for more than 16 kilometres, Samaria Gorge takes visitors through ancient forests, towering cliffs reaching 500 metres in height, and dramatic mountain scenery.

Along the Trail

After completing the hike, you will reach Agia Roumeli, which is accessible only on foot or by ferry.

Relax with a refreshing swim before boarding the ferry and travelling along Crete’s spectacular southern coastline.

Combine Days 4 & 5

For a more immersive experience, Days 4 and 5 can be combined into a two-day journey through southern Crete.

After completing the Samaria Gorge hike and arriving in Agia Roumeli, stay overnight in the village and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere by the Libyan Sea. The following morning, continue your journey along the southern coast towards Loutro and Chora Sfakion, allowing more time to explore the beaches, villages, and dramatic landscapes of the Sfakia region at a relaxed pace.

Day 05 - Visit Sfakia

Venture into the Sfakia region and experience one of Crete’s most authentic and dramatic landscapes.

Known for its rugged mountains, secluded beaches, traditional villages, and rich history, Sfakia offers a journey through the island’s wild and unspoilt side, far from the busy tourist resorts.

Begin your day with a boat trip or water taxi from Chora Sfakion to the picturesque village of Loutro, a peaceful seaside settlement accessible only by sea or on foot.

Enjoy a relaxing morning swim in its crystal-clear waters before continuing to nearby Glyka Nera, also known as Sweet Water Beach. It is one of Crete’s most spectacular beaches, famous for the freshwater springs that emerge through the pebbles and its striking turquoise waters beneath towering cliffs.

Staying Longer in Sfakia?

For many travellers, Sfakia is more than a one-day destination. Those who choose to stay longer can explore more of the region’s traditional villages, dramatic gorges, historic landmarks, and peaceful beaches at a relaxed pace.

A visit to the mountain village of Anopolis and the impressive Aradena Gorge reveals another side of Sfakia, while Frangokastello combines a beautiful sandy beach with its iconic Venetian fortress and the fascinating legend of the Drosoulites.

With its wild landscapes, authentic character, and rich history, Sfakia rewards travellers who take the time to discover more of southern Crete.

Day 06 - Discover Paleochora

Escape to Paleochora, a relaxed seaside town on Crete’s unspoilt southwestern coast. Known for its colourful waterfront, authentic character, and beautiful beaches, Paleochora offers a quieter alternative to the busy resorts of northern Crete.

If you are travelling by car, make sure to stop in the picturesque village of Kandanos, a charming mountain village rich in history and local character.

In Paleochora, spend some time wandering through its picturesque streets, browsing local boutiques, enjoying a coffee by the sea, or visiting the ruins of the Venetian Selino Castle, which overlooks the village and the Libyan Sea.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of Paleochora’s traditional waterfront tavernas, where fresh seafood, locally produced olive oil, and authentic Cretan specialities are served with stunning views of the Libyan Sea.

Beach Recommendations Around Paleochora

After exploring the village, head east or west to discover some of the area’s most beautiful beaches.

Gialiskari Beach: Surrounded by cedar trees and crystal-clear turquoise waters, Gialiskari Beach is a peaceful retreat, ideal for visitors seeking a quieter escape. Its natural setting and calm atmosphere make it perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply relaxing away from the crowds.

The wider Chania region offers much more than its famous Old Town and harbour, with dramatic coastal landscapes, historic monasteries, scenic hiking trails, traditional villages, and peaceful natural escapes all within easy reach of the city.

Explore the Akrotiri Peninsula, where secluded coves and sandy beaches sit alongside centuries-old monasteries and impressive mountain scenery. Alternatively, travel inland through lush countryside, botanical gardens, and dramatic gorges to experience a quieter and more authentic side of western Crete.
